Time in Indonesia — regions, cities and time zones
Indonesia spans three time zones: Western Indonesian Time (UTC+7), Central (UTC+8) and Eastern (UTC+9). Jakarta is in the western zone. No part of the country observes daylight saving, so all three offsets hold steady year-round.

Current time in Jakarta
Jakarta runs on Western Indonesian Time, UTC+7, under the identifier Asia/Jakarta. As the capital and the largest city, Jakarta's clock is the one most schedules default to, but assuming it covers the whole archipelago is a mistake that costs two hours at the far end.
Three zones across the archipelago
The zones step up by one hour as you move east across the islands, which suits a country stretched over a very long east–west span. Each zone has an Indonesian abbreviation you will see on domestic schedules and broadcast listings.
WIB — Waktu Indonesia Barat (UTC+7): Sumatra, Java, and the western and central parts of Kalimantan. Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Medan. WITA — Waktu Indonesia Tengah (UTC+8): Bali, Lombok, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara, and eastern and southern Kalimantan. Denpasar, Makassar.
WIT — Waktu Indonesia Timur (UTC+9): Maluku and the Papuan provinces. Ambon, Jayapura. Booking a domestic flight in Indonesia is a reading comprehension test. The departure time is local to the airport you leave from; the arrival time is local to the one you land at.
The Bali trap
Bali is the single most common source of confusion, because it is the destination most visitors know and it is not on Jakarta time. Denpasar sits in WITA at UTC+8, an hour ahead of the capital. A call arranged "for 3pm Indonesian time" between someone in Jakarta and someone in Bali will have two different, equally sincere participants showing up an hour apart.
No daylight saving anywhere
None of the three zones shifts seasonally. Indonesia lies across the equator, where day length barely varies through the year, so there is no seasonal evening light to shift around. The practical benefit is that any offset you work out today is still correct in six months.
Scheduling across the islands
Jakarta to Bali: add one hour going east. Jakarta to Jayapura: add two hours. Jakarta shares its offset with Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City all year. Bali and Makassar share theirs with Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Perth.
Jayapura matches Tokyo and Seoul. For anything national — a broadcast, a webinar, an application deadline — the safe practice is to state the zone explicitly. "19:00 WIB" is unambiguous in a way that "7pm Indonesia" never is.
Practical notes for travellers
Phones on mobile networks generally pick up the correct local zone, but a device left in airplane mode across a flight may hold the departure city's time until it reconnects. Hotel wake-up calls, tour pickups and ferry departures are always quoted in the local zone of the place you are standing in. When in doubt, ask which zone the time refers to before confirming — it is a normal question, and locals ask it too when arranging things across the archipelago.
Questions and answers

- No. Bali is on WITA (UTC+8), one hour ahead of Jakarta on WIB (UTC+7).
- Does Indonesia change its clocks for summer?
- No. None of the three zones observes daylight saving, and the offsets stay fixed all year.
- What do WIB, WITA and WIT mean?
- They are the Indonesian names for the western, central and eastern zones, at UTC+7, UTC+8 and UTC+9 respectively.
