How to use Public Holidays by Country
Choose a country from the list — from the United States and Canada to Singapore, Japan and the UAE. Scan the year's table: each holiday with its date and weekday, so long weekends jump out immediately.
Cross-check before planning: for a call between two countries, open both lists — a normal Tuesday at home can be a national day off on the other end.
Reading public holidays 2026 across borders
The phrase means different things in different places. The US has federal holidays, but states and employers vary in what they observe. The UK calls them bank holidays, with England, Scotland and Northern Ireland keeping slightly different lists. Canada layers provincial days on top of national ones, and Australia does the same by state — NSW alone has days its neighbours skip.
Elsewhere the calendars mix systems: Singapore's list draws on Chinese, Malay, Indian and Western traditions at once, and Hong Kong's blends lunar festival dates with fixed ones. That is why holidays in China, India or Japan drift from year to year — lunar and astronomical calendars refuse to sit still. The fastest way to learn a country's history is to read its list of days off.
Where the lists matter most
Remote teams: scheduling around US, UK and india holidays beats discovering them by silence in the group chat. Travel: a national day off can mean closed museums or the best street festival of the year — worth knowing which before you land.
Deliveries and banking: payments and parcels pause on official days off, and deadlines quietly slide to the next working day. Long-weekend hunting: a holiday landing on a Friday or Monday is a free mini-vacation — the weekday column exists for exactly this hunt.
What a list cannot tell you
A holiday list tells you which days are official. It does not tell you which days are quiet, and those are different sets. Some official holidays barely dent normal business; some ordinary days before a major festival are effectively closed. Local knowledge beats a list here — if you have a contact in the country, one question to them is worth more than the calendar.
Rules also change. Governments add, move and remove public holidays, and one-off national days appear for particular occasions. For dates far in the future, treat the listing as the current arrangement rather than a guarantee.
Questions and answers
- What holidays are there in March 2026?
- It depends on the country: the US has no federal holiday in March — St. Patrick's Day on March 17 is widely celebrated but does not close offices — while Japan, for instance, marks Vernal Equinox Day as an official day off late in the month. Open a country's list for its exact March.
- What time is it in the country of India while I check its holidays?
- India keeps one national time, IST, UTC+5:30, year-round — so a holiday there starts five and a half hours ahead of UTC, and the country page shows the live clock next to the list.
- Why do some holiday dates change every year?
- Because they follow other calendars: lunar ones set festivals like Chinese New Year and Eid, and Easter moves with a lunar-solar rule. Fixed civic dates — January 1, July 4, December 25 — stay put; the rest travel.
