What is a tally counter?
Originally, a small handheld gadget: a metal or plastic body with a ring for your finger, a thumb button, and a rotating number display. Ushers, referees, birdwatchers, and warehouse staff have used the mechanical kind for decades, and vintage brass models now trade as antiques. The digital descendant does the same single job on a screen. Both are heirs to the oldest counting method there is — four marks and a diagonal stroke through them.

In Terraria, the Tally Counter is an informational accessory sold by the Traveling Merchant — getting one means checking his stock when he visits, since his inventory rotates between appearances. Equipped, it shows how many enemies of the kind you last hit have been defeated. No relation to our button, apart from the shared spirit: count the thing, show the number.
Mechanical or digital?
