Word Counter — count words and characters
Count words, characters, sentences and reading time as you type.
Paste your text and the word counter shows how many words and characters it holds, instantly and as you type. No upload, no account — the numbers appear the moment the text does.
How to use Word and Character Counter
Paste or type your text into the field. Watch the counts update live with every keystroke. Edit toward your limit right here, then copy the finished text back out. Recheck after big cuts — deleting a paragraph changes both numbers at once.
Words, characters, and which one your limit means
The two numbers serve different masters. Word counts rule essays, articles, and anything academic; character counts rule forms, ads, and message fields, where spaces usually count against you too. Reading the wrong number is the classic mistake — a text comfortably under 300 words can still blow through a 1,000-character cap. Before trimming anything, find out which unit your limit is written in, because cutting words to fix a character problem wastes good sentences. A word count is the only writing feedback that is never wrong and never kind.
What is a tally counter?
A tally counter is the other kind of counting: a small handheld device with a button that adds one to a running total each time you click it. Doormen count visitors with one, birdwatchers count sightings, coaches count laps — anything that arrives one at a time, counted with one finger while the eyes stay on the work. The classic mechanical tally counter is a metal ring-held clicker with rolling digits; modern versions are digital or live as phone apps. A tasbih counter serves the same one-click purpose for counting recited prayers. This page counts text; a clicker counts the world.
Common counting jobs
Essays and assignments with a required word range. Bios, forms, and ads with hard character ceilings. Translations and paid writing, where the count sets the price. Speeches, where the number of words is a decent proxy for minutes on stage.
Questions and answers
- How do you get the Tally Counter in Terraria?
- In Terraria, the Tally Counter is an informational accessory that shows how many enemies of the current type you have defeated. It drops as loot from enemies inside the Dungeon, so it becomes obtainable once you can fight your way in.
- Is this a free word counter?
- Yes — free without an asterisk. No trial, no premium tier, no sign-up gate between you and the numbers.
- Why use an online word counter instead of my writing app?
- Because much of what you write never passes through a writing app: chat boxes, web forms, and email drafts count nothing for you. Pasting here takes seconds and works for text from anywhere.
