Current time in Nairobi
Kenya uses East Africa Time, UTC+3, for the whole country and for the whole year. Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu all read the same hour, and clocks are never adjusted seasonally.
East Africa Time
Kenya sits in East Africa and follows a single zone recorded as Africa/Nairobi, three hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. The same offset is shared by several neighbouring countries, which makes regional coordination unusually straightforward: a time quoted in Nairobi generally needs no conversion for partners across the border.
There is no fractional offset and no half-hour oddity to remember. Three hours ahead of UTC, from January to December.
Why daylight saving would gain nothing
Kenya straddles the equator, and that single fact explains the absence of seasonal clock changes. Day length varies only slightly across the year — sunrise and sunset stay close to the same clock times in every month.
Daylight saving exists to shift working hours against a large seasonal swing in daylight; here there is almost no swing to shift against. Moving the clocks would introduce disruption twice a year in exchange for no extra usable evening light.
As a result the offset to UTC is a fixed +3 and never needs checking against a date. On the equator the sun keeps office hours all year. It is the rest of the world that insists on renegotiating them every spring.
Counties and the shape of the day
Kenya is divided into counties, from Turkana in the northwest to Mombasa on the coast, and none of them keeps a separate time. The country's east–west extent is modest enough that one zone fits it without strain, so the clock in a coastal town and the clock in the Rift Valley agree.
One local usage is worth knowing about for travellers. Alongside the standard clock, a way of counting hours from dawn is used in Swahili in everyday speech, where the count begins at sunrise rather than at midnight. Timetables, offices and official schedules use the standard 24-hour clock, but if a spoken time seems six hours out from what you expected, this is usually why — and it is worth confirming rather than assuming.
Scheduling with Kenya
Kenya runs ahead of the United Kingdom by two hours in the British summer and three in winter, because Britain changes its clocks and Kenya does not. Against Central Europe the gap is one hour in the European summer and two in winter.
Neighbouring countries on UTC+3 need no conversion at all, which simplifies East African regional meetings. Because Kenya's own offset is fixed, any drift in a recurring meeting comes from the other participant's clock change — set the reminder to their calendar, not yours.
Questions and answers
