Mauritius sits at UTC+4, which places it an hour ahead of Madagascar to the west and in the same band as several territories to the north. This is a reminder that Indian Ocean islands do not share a single clock: they are far apart, and each keeps its own reckoning. Assuming a common "island time" across the ocean is a reliable way to miss a call.

Rodrigues keeps the capital's clock

Rodrigues lies well east of the main island, far enough that a purely geographic approach might have argued for a different offset. It does not have one. The island uses the same time as Port Louis, which keeps flight schedules and administration between the two straightforward — the flight time is real, the time difference is not.

Two islands, several hundred kilometres of ocean, and not one minute of disagreement about when the day starts.

Daylight saving: currently none

Mauritius does not observe daylight saving time. The offset is UTC+4 in every month. As with most countries that keep a fixed clock, any change in the difference to Europe or North America originates entirely at the other end, when those countries make their seasonal switch.

Business hours and the working overlap

UTC+4 gives Mauritius a workable overlap with both Europe and much of Asia within a single working day, which suits a country with financial and offshore services links in both directions. A Mauritian afternoon meets a European morning comfortably; a Mauritian morning meets much of Asia. The Americas remain the difficult direction, as they are from anywhere in the Indian Ocean.

For visitors, the practical points are few: phones set themselves on arrival, and travel between Port Louis and Rodrigues requires no adjustment at all. The only clock worth checking twice is the one belonging to whoever you are calling abroad.
