Chișinău sets the clock for the whole country. The IANA identifier is Europe/Chisinau, covering UTC+2 in winter and UTC+3 during summer time. Every settlement in Moldova follows it: Bălți, Tiraspol, Cahul, Comrat, Ungheni.

Living with the twice-yearly shift

The spring change costs an hour of sleep and hands back a long evening; the autumn change does the reverse. In Chișinău the practical effect is most visible in December and January, when the sun sets in the middle of the afternoon and the working day ends in the dark regardless of what the clock says.

Daylight saving does not create daylight. It moves the argument about daylight from the morning to the evening, and back again six months later. Because Moldova follows the same dates as the EU, its offset to Western European partners never breaks mid-season. This is not true of every neighbour of the union, and it removes a whole class of scheduling error from cross-border business.

Converting to Moldovan time

Some anchors for working across the offset: Chișinău is always one hour ahead of Central European cities such as Berlin, Warsaw and Rome. It is two hours ahead of the United Kingdom and Ireland year-round.

That last point is the one to watch. The EU and the United States switch on different dates, so for a couple of weeks each spring and autumn the usual difference is off by one. Anyone running a recurring call between Chișinău and North America should expect it.
