Bucharest is Romania's largest city and its reference clock. The country keeps a single time zone despite stretching from the Black Sea coast in the east to the Hungarian border in the west, a span of roughly 700 kilometres.

That distance matters more than the map suggests. The eastern edge at Constanța sees the sun rise noticeably earlier than the western cities of Timișoara and Oradea — the natural solar difference across the country is around half an hour, absorbed into one shared offset.

The two clock changes

Romania follows the European Union schedule, so its transitions happen on the same instant as the rest of the bloc rather than at a local hour of its own choosing: Clocks go forward one hour on the last Sunday in March, moving from UTC+2 to UTC+3.

Clocks go back one hour on the last Sunday in October, returning to UTC+2. Both changes occur at 01:00 UTC, which lands at 03:00 local time in Romania. The country is one hour ahead of Central European countries such as Germany, Poland and Hungary throughout the year.

Romania and Hungary share a long border and never share an hour. Cross it westbound and you gain sixty minutes; the drive back charges them straight back.

Regions under one offset

Romania's historical regions — Wallachia in the south, Moldavia in the northeast, Transylvania across the Carpathian arc, plus Dobruja on the coast and the Banat in the west — have distinct identities and, at various points, distinct histories. None of them keeps a separate clock. Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Timișoara, Brașov and Constanța all read Bucharest time.

The Carpathians cut through the middle of the country, and mountain valleys lose direct sun early regardless of what the clock says. In winter, when the offset is UTC+2 and days are short, some Transylvanian valley towns get their last direct light well before the published sunset for the region.

Planning around Romanian time

The alignment with the EU schedule makes cross-border scheduling straightforward within Europe and slightly less so beyond it: Against UTC: two hours ahead in winter, three in summer. Against Central European Time countries: one hour ahead, year-round, because both sides change on the same date.

Against the UK: two hours ahead, also year-round, for the same reason. Against Moldova, its eastern neighbour: identical, both on EET with EU-style changes. The fixed one-hour lead over Central Europe is the single most useful thing to memorise. A meeting set for 10:00 in Berlin is 11:00 in Bucharest in any month of the year.
