Am and pm definition

A.m. means ante meridiem, before midday. P.m. means post meridiem, after midday. They label the two halves of a 12-hour clock. They do not define a circadian rhythm.

How it works

A 12-hour clock recycles the numbers 1 through 12 twice a day. The suffix tells you which pass you are on. 8 a.m. is morning. 8 p.m. is evening. The Latin is literal: ante meridiem is before the meridian, the middle of the day; post meridiem is after it. Written forms vary: a.m., am, AM. The meaning does not. Lowercase with periods is the older print form. Capitals without periods are common on devices.

The pair only works if you also know whether 12 is noon or midnight. By ordinary civil convention in English, 12:00 p.m. is noon and 12:00 a.m. is midnight. That convention is useful and ugly, because noon is the meridian itself, not after it, and midnight is equally not “before midday” in a comfortable way. If a form allows it, write noon and midnight as words. A 24-hour clock sidesteps the whole suffix: 00:00 is the start of the civil day, 12:00 is noon, 23:59 is the last minute before the next date.

1 a.m. to 11 a.m.: morning hours after midnight. 12 p.m.: noon by common English usage. 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.: afternoon and evening. 12 a.m.: midnight by common English usage. Do not write 16 p.m. There is no 16 on a 12-hour dial. 16:00 is 4 p.m. Mixing a 24-hour hour with a 12-hour suffix is not a third system. It is a broken line.

Where the 12-hour labels stop

Schedules, store hours, and invitations in the United States still lean on a.m. and p.m. Timetables, hospitals, militaries, and most of the world’s transport use 24-hour time. Both are formats for the same spinning Earth. Neither one is more scientific. Convert by adding twelve to afternoon hours, except noon, which stays 12:00, and midnight, which becomes 00:00 if you mean the start of the date.

A time zone does not change the definition. 3 p.m. in one zone and 3 p.m. in another are the same clock reading on different meridians. The suffix still means after midday locally. If you need a single instant for two cities, you need the zone, not a louder a.m.

If you have to argue about whether 12 is a.m. or p.m., write noon or midnight and go home.

Circadian rhythm definition

A circadian rhythm is an internal cycle of roughly a day. In animals it shows up in sleep and wake, hormone timing, body temperature, and other daily swings. Light, especially morning light, is the usual cue that ties that cycle to the local sun. The word is about biology, not about the letters a.m. and p.m. printed on a phone.

People still wake near dawn and fade at night when clocks are hidden, which is the point of the word circadian: the body keeps an about-a-day beat. Isolated from daylight and clocks, that beat is often a little longer than 24 hours, so it drifts unless light or another cue resets it. Civil a.m. and p.m. do not measure that beat. They chop the public day at midday so a 12-hour dial can be read twice. You can have a night shift that runs through a.m. hours while your circadian night is still trying to sleep. The suffix on the wall is not your rhythm.

When someone asks for the circadian rhythm definition in the same breath as am and pm definition, they are stacking two clocks. Answer them as two clocks. One is Latin for before and after midday. The other is the body’s day-length cycle, steered by light, not by a suffix.

Questions and answers

What does a.m. stand for?
Ante meridiem, before midday. P.m. is post meridiem, after midday.
Is 12 p.m. noon or midnight?
In ordinary English usage, 12 p.m. is noon and 12 a.m. is midnight. Writing the words noon and midnight is clearer.
Is a circadian rhythm the same as a.m. and p.m.?
No. Circadian means an about-a-day biological cycle. A.m. and p.m. are labels on a 12-hour civil clock.
