Native american day

Native American Day is a state observance, not a U.S. federal holiday. California keeps the fourth Friday in September. South Dakota keeps the second Monday in October. They are not the same square.

How it works

The English name is shared. The clocks are not. California's Native American Day is the fourth Friday of September, written into the state's holiday list. In 2026 that Friday is 25 September. In 2027 it is 24 September. From Thursday 3 September 2026 the California Friday is twenty-two days ahead. South Dakota's Native Americans' Day is the second Monday in October, a legal holiday in that state since 1990. In 2026 that Monday is 12 October. In 2027 it is 11 October.

Federal offices do not close for either date under this name. Columbus Day, still on the federal table as the second Monday in October, is a different legal title that happens to share South Dakota's Monday. Many cities and states now keep Indigenous Peoples' Day on that same October Monday. South Dakota's statute uses Native Americans' Day. A federal worker in Rapid City and a state worker in Rapid City can therefore meet different doors on the same morning. Ask which list the building follows.

California's Friday is not that October Monday. Nevada also uses the fourth Friday in September under this name. Other states print other labels on other days. Do not export Sacramento's Friday onto a Sioux Falls planner, or the reverse, and call the locked door a mistake.

Two state clocks, and the November neighbours

Keep the nearby names from eating this one: California Native American Day: fourth Friday in September (25 September 2026; 24 September 2027). South Dakota Native Americans' Day: second Monday in October (12 October 2026; 11 October 2027).

Indigenous Peoples' Day: often that same October Monday, under another title. Native American Heritage Month: November. Native American Heritage Day: the Friday after Thanksgiving (27 November 2026), a federal commemorative day, not this September Friday.

California's date goes back through a 1968 American Indian Day resolution on that fourth Friday and a 1998 statute that named Native American Day. Courts in California treat the Friday as a judicial holiday. Whether a given state office, school, or shop closes is still a local or contract question. A 2026 bill sought to turn that Friday into paid leave for all California state employees. Until a signed law and a workplace notice agree, do not assume every desk is closed.

South Dakota created Native Americans' Day in 1990, in a Year of Reconciliation associated with Governor George S. Mickelson and with advocacy from journalist Tim Giago, among others. The Monday is a state legal holiday there. It is not a nationwide close.

Borrow the name if you must. Do not borrow the Friday from a state you are not standing in.

What the day is for where it is actually kept

Where the Friday or the Monday is live, the work is honour and teaching: tribal flags, capitol gatherings, classroom history that does not begin at a mission bell, and a public pause that names the people who were already here. A non-Native office that puts up a generic headdress graphic has not kept the day. A school that invites the local tribe to set the terms of a lesson has started to. Follow the hosts. Do not invent a costume.

If you are not in California or South Dakota, your civil calendar may still be an ordinary Friday or an ordinary October Monday, or it may be Indigenous Peoples' Day, or Columbus Day, or nothing extra. Read the jurisdiction you will stand in that morning. A holiday page cannot staff a till in another state.

After 25 September 2026 the next California Friday is 24 September 2027. After 12 October 2026 the next South Dakota Monday is 11 October 2027. Set two reminders if you need both. One repeating alarm labelled “Native American Day” will fire on the wrong clock.
