Flag Day in the United States is June 14 every year. It marks the 1777 resolution that adopted the Stars and Stripes. It is a national observance, not a federal closing day.

The date does not move. June 14 is June 14 on a Tuesday, a Sunday, or a Saturday. In 2026 it falls on Sunday. In 2027 it falls on Monday. The weekday rides the civil calendar. The observance does not slide to the nearest Monday the way some federal holidays do.
On 14 June 1777 the Second Continental Congress resolved that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, and a union of thirteen stars, white in a blue field. Congress later designated June 14 as Flag Day. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed a national observance in 1916. President Harry Truman signed the permanent Flag Day law in 1949. The week that contains June 14 is National Flag Week, by a later request that the President proclaim it each year.
The same civil date is the U.S. Army’s birthday, from the 1775 founding of the Continental Army. Two commemorations can share 14 June. They are still two marks. Flag Day is about the flag’s adoption date. The Army birthday is about the army’s founding date two years earlier.
June 14 sits between two summers
Meteorological summer in the north already began on 1 June, so Flag Day is a summer date on the weather calendar. Astronomical summer waits for the June solstice, around 20 or 21 June, so Flag Day is still late spring on the sky calendar. Neither reading moves the 14th. People who say “early summer” and people who say “late spring” are arguing about light and heat, not about the square on the month.
School years in many U.S. districts are winding down in mid-June. That is coincidence of the academic season, not a Flag Day closing rule. A school may hold a ceremony. A school may already be on break. Banks, post offices, and federal offices follow an ordinary June weekday or an ordinary Sunday. Pennsylvania has long treated Flag Day as a state holiday in law; that still does not make June 14 a nationwide day off, and local practice for offices and schools is not a single national timetable.
Mark 14 June, not “the second Monday in June.” Treat meteorological summer (from 1 June) as the weather season around the date. Treat the June solstice as a later sky marker, not as Flag Day. Display of the flag on federal buildings is requested for Flag Day and for National Flag Week; your workplace hours are a separate question.
Honor America Days is the stretch from Flag Day through Independence Day on 4 July. That corridor is seasonal language for midsummer civic dates. It does not close shops for three weeks. If you needed a day off, look at 4 July, which is the federal holiday in that corridor, not at 14 June.
The flag keeps 14 June even when the weather calendar has already called it summer and the sky calendar has not.
