How it works

Whitsun, Whit Sunday, and Whitsunday are names for the same Christian feast: Pentecost, fifty days after Easter Sunday counting Easter itself, which is also the seventh Sunday after Easter. The New Testament scene it marks is the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples in Acts. Churches that keep the feast keep it on that Sunday. The civil week around it is what people mean by Whitsun week or Whitsuntide: Whit Sunday plus the days that follow, especially Whit Monday.

Because Easter is movable, Whitsun is movable. It lands in late spring, often in May, sometimes in June. You cannot pin Whitsun week to a fixed Monday on a wall calendar the way you pin Christmas to 25 December. You find Easter for that year, count seven Sundays, and the week is the one that contains that Sunday.

The name is commonly explained from the white clothes of people baptized at the feast. That is an old English explanation, not a proof. What the calendar needs is the date rule, not the etymology.

Whit Monday and the bank holiday that moved

Whit Monday is the day after Whit Sunday. In England, Wales, and Ireland it was a statutory bank holiday under the Bank Holidays Act 1871. The Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 then put the late-spring holiday on the last Monday in May instead, after a trial of that arrangement in the 1960s. In England and Wales that day is now the Spring Bank Holiday. It sometimes coincides with Whit Monday and often does not. Ireland later put a June holiday in place of Whit Monday. Several European countries still treat Whit Monday, also called Pentecost Monday, as a public holiday. The United Kingdom does not, except when the last Monday in May happens to be that Monday.

Find Easter Sunday for the year you care about. Count seven Sundays forward; that Sunday is Whitsun, which is Pentecost. Whit Monday is the next day. In England and Wales, the late-spring day off work is the last Monday in May, which is a separate rule.

Medieval English custom treated Whitsuntide as one of the holiday weeks in the farming year, with fairs and ales. Morris dancing and Whit walks are among the later public customs tied to the season. Many of those public events now sit on the Spring Bank Holiday weekend instead of on the movable religious Monday, which is why a town can still say “Whitsun” and mean the last weekend in May.

A movable feast will not sit still on the last Monday in May just because the bank holiday did.

How to place it on this year’s calendar

If you need church: use the Pentecost date for that communion. Western and Eastern dates can differ when calendars differ. If you need time off in England or Wales: use the government’s Spring Bank Holiday date, last Monday in May, and do not assume it is Whit Monday. If you need a European office being closed: ask whether that country keeps Pentecost Monday. The three answers can be three different days in the same year.

Western Easter in 2026 is 5 April, so Western Pentecost, Whitsun, is 24 May, and Whit Monday is 25 May, which was also the Spring Bank Holiday in the United Kingdom that year. That coincidence is a calendar accident, not the new rule. In 2027 Western Easter is 28 March, Whitsun is 16 May, and Whit Monday is 17 May, while the Spring Bank Holiday is 31 May. Always recompute; do not reuse one year as a template.
